GLRPPR e-mail lists migrate to GLIN’s Google Groups

GLRPPR’s mailing lists, Roundtable and P2Tech, have been managed by the Great Lakes Information Network (GLIN) for many years. Last week, GLIN began migrating these lists to Google Groups. If you’re a member of either of these lists, you should have received messages notifying you of this change.

You should have received invitations to join the new groups. If you haven’t seen them, check your spam/junk folder. Sometimes mail programs filter them there.

The posting addresses for these groups have not changed. They are:

New GLRPPR White Paper: Assessing the Information Needs of Pollution Prevention Technical Assistance Providers in the Great Lakes Region

As part of its 2013-2014 Pollution Prevention Information Network (PPIN) grant, GLRPPR contracted with the University of Illinois’ Survey Research Laboratory (SRL) to conduct a regional information needs assessment. The assessment was designed to determine how pollution prevention (P2) technical assistance providers in the region currently locate and access information; how they stay up-to-date in the field; how they prefer to receive training; and what training and information gaps exist within these broad focus areas. Fred Granek, RIP

fred-granekIt is with sorrow that we share the sad news of Fred Granek’s passing on January 2, 2014 .  Fred was a long time (1993), dedicated supporter and contributor to the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable and the Great Lakes Regional Pollution Prevention Roundtable.  Fred joined the Canadian Center for Pollution Prevention as President in September 2013.  Prior to Joining C2P2, Fred was the Vice President for Sustainability at the Bloom Centre for Sustainability (2000-2013) and the Manager of the Pollution Prevention Office at the Ontario Ministry of Environment (1993-2000).

Fred was passionate about the environment.  He dedicated his professional life to helping businesses improve their environmental impacts and dedicated his personal life to his family, friends and spending time experiencing nature.  Fred will be missed by all of us who were fortunate enough to be touched by his spirit and zest for life.

GLRPPR, Michigan RETAP, Bloom Centre for Sustainability featured in January 2013 issue of P2 Press

Three pollution programs from the Great Lakes region were featured in the January 2013 issue P2 Press, published by the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable.

The GLRPPR update focused on the organization’s leadership change, as well as recent webinars and other services. The Michigan RETAP update detailed three awards won by the program in 2012, as well as improvements made, and other program successes. The article about the Bloom Centre discusses a partnership between the Centre and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters to deliver a Cleaner and Greener Manufacturing Program.

Laura L. Barnes named GLRPPR Executive Director

Laura L. Barnes has been named the Executive Director of the Great Lakes Regional Pollution Prevention Roundtable.  Laura is a librarian with the Prairie Research Institute and the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center at the University of Illinois. She has been active in GLRPPR and P2Rx for more than a decade and is best known for her work using social media and other web 2.0 tools to improve information sharing with specialized clients and the general public. She also authors the Environmental News Bits blog (http://envnewsbits.wordpress.com). Laura earned a B.A. in History and an M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has served on the boards of several library organizations and is active in statewide library committees. She is a member of the American Library Association, the Illinois Library Association, the Special Libraries Association, and the Society of Environmental Journalists.

Adding Social Media to Your Toolbox

If you’re still not sure what all the fuss is about related to social networking, and think that tweets are just for the birds, you may want to participate in an upcoming webinar hosted by the Northeast Waste Management Officials Association (NEWMOA), entitled How P2 Assistance Providers Can Effectively Use Social Media. NEWMOA, like the Great Lakes Regional Pollution Prevention Roundtable (GLRPPR), is one of eight regional pollution prevention information centers throughout the U.S. that collectively comprise the Pollution Prevention Resource Exchange (P2Rx).

The webinar, scheduled for this Thursday, September 15 at 1 PM Central, will explain how the use of social media and web 2.0 technologies can bring value to pollution prevention and assistance programs. The presenters will also discuss their experiences using different social media applications to reach a variety of audiences, and share tips on what has been successful. One of the presenters will be GLRPPR’s own Laura Barnes, who will discuss “How to Get Started Using Social Media.” Other speakers include Andy Bray of NEWMOA and Sarah Haas from the Minnesota Technical Assistance Program (MnTAP).

Social media can be a powerful tool for staying informed, networking (especially in these days of limited budgets and frowned upon travel requests), and spreading the word about your products and services without spending a great deal of money.  After participating in the webinar, I encourage you to make use of GLRPPR’s Twitter and Facebook pages. These pages incorporate items from various GLRPPR RSS feeds, such as news items, new additions to our Sector Resources, and blog posts (like this one!), so they can be a great way to catch the best highlights from many of our services in one place.  These pages also feature items re-posted (“re-tweeted”) by myself and Laura from the various other Twitter, Facebook and news sources that we monitor — our recommendations for content that you would find interesting and useful. They also offer an opportunity to comment on posts (Facebook) or use direct messages and “mentions” (Twitter), thus providing an online forum for discussion of resources. And through the use of conventions (like Twitter’s #FollowFriday and #EcoMonday) and lists of friends and followers, you can learn about other people and organizations engaged in work and interests similar to yours.

So be sure to register for the webinar on NEWMOA’s web site. We’d love for you to be one of our tweeps!

The pollution prevention world has undergone dramatic changes in staff, funding, technology, and program objectives since the Great Lakes Regional Pollution Prevention Roundtable (GLRPPR) was established in the 1990s. GLRPPR needs to change to keep pace with the rest of the P2 community. As the GLRPPR Steering Committee, EPA’s Regional Pollution Prevention coordinator, and GLRPPR staff continue this process, we need your help.

ISTC Receives Pair of National Environmental Awards

The Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) has received a pair of national environmental awards. Awards were received for the Sustainable Electronics Initiative (SEI) and by Dr. Tim Lindsey.

MVP2 Awards

The 2010 Most Valuable Pollution Prevention (MVP2) awards presented by the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (NPPR) celebrate the successes of innovators in the areas of pollution prevention and sustainability. These prestigious awards were presented recently at a ceremony in Washington, DC.  ISTC is a unit of the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
